Students who are not proficient in reading by third grade have a harder time earning a diploma in high school. Reading is an important and necessary skill for life. Obviously, educators promote reading every day at school but what can you do at home to help your child learn? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/blog\/10-ways-parents-can-support-reading-at-home\">The Annie E. Casey Foundation<\/a> has put together a great list of practical steps.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Despite decades of intense focus, many schools strug\u00adgle to teach all stu\u00addents to read. In the Annie E. Casey Foundation\u2019s <a title=\"2022 KIDS COUNT Data Book\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/resources\/2022-kids-count-data-book\"><span class=\"numbers\">2022<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">KIDS<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">COUNT<\/span><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Data Book<\/a>, researchers found that\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">81<\/span>% of fourth-graders in low-income fam\u00adi\u00adlies scored below pro\u00adfi\u00adcient in read\u00ading. These stu\u00addents,\u00a0<a title=\"Fourth-graders who scored below proficient reading level by family income in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/datacenter.aecf.org\/data\/tables\/5125-fourth-graders-who-scored-below-proficient-reading-level-by-family-income#detailed\/1\/any\/false\/1095,1729,871,573,36,867,38\/1171,1172\/11558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the data show<\/a>, were about one-and-a-half times more like\u00adly to fall short of read\u00ading pro\u00adfi\u00adcien\u00adcy when com\u00adpared to their more afflu\u00adent\u00a0peers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Both pover\u00adty and race exac\u00ader\u00adbate this prob\u00adlem: For Black and Lati\u00adno stu\u00addents, the com\u00adbined effect of pover\u00adty and poor third-grade read\u00ading skills makes their high school dropout rate eight times greater than aver\u00adage. Even pro\u00adfi\u00adcient third graders who have lived in pover\u00adty grad\u00adu\u00adate from high school at about the same rate as sub\u00adpar read\u00aders who have nev\u00ader been\u00a0poor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Par\u00adents can exert a\u00a0pow\u00ader\u00adful influ\u00adence on a\u00a0child\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy devel\u00adop\u00adment, read\u00ading abil\u00adi\u00adties and atti\u00adtudes around lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy \u2014 and this influ\u00adence starts at an ear\u00adly age, the research con\u00adsis\u00adtent\u00adly\u00a0shows.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yet, from\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">2015<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">2016<\/span>, a\u00a0large share of kids were still miss\u00ading out on reg\u00adu\u00adlar sto\u00adry time. Over\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">40<\/span>% of all young chil\u00addren, ages\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">5<\/span>\u00a0or under, had a\u00a0fam\u00adi\u00adly mem\u00adber read to them less than four days a\u00a0week,\u00a0<a title=\"Two in five kids are read to less than four days a week\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/blog\/two-in-five-kids-are-read-to-less-than-four-days-a-week\">accord\u00ading to researchers<\/a>. Nar\u00adrow the view to Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Indi\u00adan, Lati\u00adno and Asian and Pacif\u00adic Islander kids, and the share of chil\u00addren miss\u00ading out on reg\u00adu\u00adlar read\u00ading ses\u00adsions jumps even high\u00ader \u2014 to\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">50<\/span>%.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For many par\u00adents, help\u00ading their kids to learn to read can be intim\u00adi\u00addat\u00ading. Young children\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy skills encom\u00adpass many aspects, among\u00a0them:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>knowl\u00adedge of the alphabet;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>aware\u00adness of the sounds that let\u00adters\u00a0make;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>abil\u00adi\u00adty to con\u00adnect sounds with let\u00adters;\u00a0and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>vocab\u00adu\u00adlary.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Ear\u00adly lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy skills do not emerge spon\u00adta\u00adneous\u00adly \u2014\u00a0<a title=\"Ensuring Success for Young Children\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/resources\/ensuring-success-for-young-children\">they require time and prac\u00adtice<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How can par\u00adents sup\u00adport lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy devel\u00adop\u00adment and help to set their child up for future achieve\u00adment? Luck\u00adi\u00adly there are many proven ways for par\u00adents to sup\u00adport read\u00ading at\u00a0home.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>ADVICE FOR PAR\u00adENTS OF EAR\u00adLY OR EMERG\u00adING READERS<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Here are a\u00a0few tips to help ear\u00adly readers:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>READ EVERY\u00a0DAY<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Find a\u00a0time to read with your child every day. Even a\u00a0brief dai\u00adly com\u00admit\u00adment can con\u00advey that read\u00ading is an impor\u00adtant pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adty for\u00a0you.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>MAKE A\u00a0SPACE FOR READING<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Cre\u00adate a\u00a0com\u00adfort\u00adable, con\u00adsis\u00adtent place in your home where you can read togeth\u00ader, enjoy books and chat about them. You might even make it a\u00a0place where food and drink are wel\u00adcome \u2014 these sig\u00adnal that read\u00ading can be a\u00a0social activity.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>MAKE READ\u00adING\u00a0SILLY<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Don\u2019t be afraid to get sil\u00adly. Read\u00ading should be fun. Meet your child where he or she is, and don\u2019t insist on\u00a0\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>seri\u00adous\u201d or\u00a0\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>clas\u00adsic\u201d books. Sil\u00adly books, comics, ani\u00adm\u00e9 or oth\u00ader art-dri\u00adven books are a\u00a0good way to get many chil\u00addren inter\u00adest\u00aded in read\u00ading. If pos\u00adsi\u00adble, act out or sing the words of sto\u00adries or find oth\u00ader ways to enjoy\u00a0books.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>VIS\u00adIT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Plan trips to the library. Get\u00adting your child a\u00a0library card can get them excit\u00aded about books. Don\u2019t wor\u00adry about read\u00ading every book \u2014 library trips should be fun. At first, these vis\u00adits may sim\u00adply con\u00adsist of spend\u00ading time wan\u00adder\u00ading the rows of books and meet\u00ading librarians.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>LIBRAR\u00adI\u00adANS ARE RESOURCES<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Ask librar\u00adi\u00adans which books are appro\u00adpri\u00adate for your child and which books kids are excit\u00aded\u00a0about.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>SEEK OUT ADAPTATIONS<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Read books that are being adapt\u00aded into movies, and com\u00adpare one type of media to the\u00a0other.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>ENCOUR\u00adAGE WRITING<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Encour\u00adage your child to write thank-you notes, let\u00adters, jour\u00adnal entries and sto\u00adries about their dai\u00adly life and expe\u00adri\u00adences. If your child is uncom\u00adfort\u00adable writ\u00ading, sug\u00adgest that he or she cre\u00adate a\u00a0com\u00adic\u00a0strip.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>BUILD LIT\u00adER\u00adA\u00adCY WITH OTH\u00adER ACTIVITIES\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Enjoy puz\u00adzles, mazes, cross\u00adwords and oth\u00ader games, which enable your child to build lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy skills while hav\u00ading\u00a0fun.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>PART\u00adNER WITH TEACHERS<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Work with teach\u00aders to under\u00adstand their approach to lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy and ask how you can help at home.
