{"id":7140,"date":"2022-08-25T12:48:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T16:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/all4schools.org\/?p=7140"},"modified":"2023-02-09T11:38:42","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T16:38:42","slug":"school-board-elections-a-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all4schools.org\/2022\/08\/25\/school-board-elections-a-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"School board elections: A Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"headline\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/article\/desantis-backed-candidates-rack-up-school-board-wins-across-florida\/\">74 interviewed<\/a> our own Melissa Erickson Tuesday night after the polls closed on schools board elections across the state.<\/p>\n<p><em>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019s effort to fill local school board seats with candidates who embrace his conservative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rondesantis.com\/schoolboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education agenda<\/a>\u00a0was mostly a success Tuesday night \u2014 even in some counties that lean to the left.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Unofficial results show 19 of the 30 candidates he endorsed won their races. Six others are headed to runoffs in the general election on Nov. 8 and five were defeated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWomen with kids are the swing vote in Florida,\u201d said Susan MacManus, a political science professor at the University of South Florida. DeSantis, she added, was \u201cbrilliant\u201d in waiting until early voting was over Sunday to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/desantis-promotes-school-board-candidates-in-south-florida-while-protestors-rally-against-him\/2840492\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hold rallies<\/a>\u00a0on behalf of his candidates. \u201cHe knows that the majority of Republicans are going to vote on Election Day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The majority of the governor\u2019s favored candidates won in counties that voted for former President Trump in 2020, but some also picked up seats in Democratic strongholds.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re excited about the boards we flipped that now have a majority of parents\u2019 rights members,\u201d said Tina Descovich, a co-founder of Moms for Liberty, a growing conservative organization that, like DeSantis, is opposed to schools\u2019 attention to LGBTQ rights and social justice issues. \u201cParents know their children the best.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>DeSantis was not the only candidate to endorse school board candidates in August. Rep. Charlie Crist, Democrat&#8217;s nominee for governor, also endorsed.<\/p>\n<p><em>DeSantis has made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thecapitolist.com\/gov-desantis-launches-education-agenda-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parental rights<\/a>\u00a0a cornerstone of his re-election campaign. In November, he\u2019ll face U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, a Democrat and former governor who released his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2022\/07\/20\/following-desantis-democrat-charlie-crist-makes-his-own-school-board-race-endorsements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">own list<\/a>\u00a0of school board preferences. But some education advocates viewed the endorsements from both candidates as unwelcome intrusion into nonpartisan races.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cParents don\u2019t like it,\u201d said Melissa Erickson, executive director of the Alliance for Public Schools \u2014 an advocacy organization focusing on districts along the I-4 corridor, from Tampa (Hillsborough County) to Daytona Beach (Volusia County). \u201cThey want school board meetings to be boring again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/article\/desantis-backed-candidates-rack-up-school-board-wins-across-florida\/\">Read the article here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 74 interviewed our own Melissa Erickson Tuesday night after the polls closed on schools board elections across the state.
