{"id":5553,"date":"2021-03-08T13:45:39","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T18:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/all4schools.org\/?p=5553"},"modified":"2021-03-10T10:30:55","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T15:30:55","slug":"teachers-in-florida-and-texas-can-get-covid-19-shots-despite-governors-edicts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all4schools.org\/2021\/03\/08\/teachers-in-florida-and-texas-can-get-covid-19-shots-despite-governors-edicts\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers in Florida and Texas can get COVID-19 shots despite governors&#8217; edicts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March 5, 2021<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/teachers-covid-vaccine-florida-texas-pharmacies\/\">CBS News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>School and childcare workers now have an opportunity to get the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">COVID-19<\/a><\/span>\u00a0vaccine even if they live in one of the roughly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/where-teachers-are-eligible-for-the-covid-19-vaccine\/2021\/01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dozen<\/a> states around the U.S. where they have not yet been declared eligible.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After a shift in federal policy this week, pharmacy chain CVS Health said it would adhere to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/retail-pharmacy-program\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Biden administration guidelines<\/a>\u00a0that state day care workers, preschool teachers and educators in elementary, middle and high schools may be vaccinated with no age limit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We are following the directive of the CDC for the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program to vaccinate pre-K through 12 educators, staff and childcare workers in all 17 states where we currently are a Federal pharmacy partner,&#8221; a CVS spokesman told CBS MoneyWatch in an email.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/walmart-cvs-walgreens-covid-vaccine-appointments-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">CVS is among<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the 21 national drugstore chains and networks participating in a federal effort to accelerate vaccine distribution to combat a pandemic that has infected nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">29 million Americans<\/a>\u00a0and killed almost 520,000 people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>President Joe Biden on Tuesday urged states to prioritize vaccinating teachers, noting that at least 30 states already did so. He also said he was using the authority of the federal government to ensure that all states and the District of Columbia follow suit.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;As yet another move to help accelerate the safe reopening of schools, let&#8217;s treat in-person learning like an essential service that it is. And that means getting essential workers who provide that service \u2014 educators, school staff, child care workers \u2014 get them vaccinated immediately. They&#8217;re essential workers,&#8221; Mr. Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/03\/02\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-administrations-covid-19-vaccination-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The presidential directive opened up vaccinations to those workers in states including Florida and Texas. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had limited the shots to educators age 50 and older, and had not yet opened up vaccinations to daycare and preschool teachers.
