{"id":2902,"date":"2017-07-07T12:43:32","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T16:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/all4schools.org\/?p=2902"},"modified":"2017-07-07T18:28:18","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T22:28:18","slug":"powerful-commission-determine-future-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all4schools.org\/2017\/07\/07\/powerful-commission-determine-future-florida\/","title":{"rendered":"Powerful commission and election will determine the future of Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2903 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/all4schools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/consitution-revision.png\" alt=\"Constitution Revision Commission\" width=\"400\" height=\"350\" \/>The 2018 election season is already shaping up to be a momentous one for Florida&#8217;s public schools. The governor&#8217;s office and cabinet positions will be on the ballot along with \u00a0other seats including the U.S. Senate, House and a slew of State House and Senate races.<\/p>\n<p>Every 20 years the <em><strong>Constitution Revision Commission<\/strong><\/em> meets and proposes amendments to the Florida Constitution. Their amendments will appear on the already lengthy 2018 ballot. The outcome of this election will potentially change the future of school funding, vouchers, charter schools and more.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A\u00a0new survey from Florida TaxWatch\u00a0found 77 percent of Florida voters said they haven\u2019t heard about recent Constitution Revision Commission meetings. Another 13 percent of respondents, according to the survey, said they only saw, read or heard \u201ca little\u201d about the commission\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>Those findings come after months of public hearings across the state to get input from Floridians on issues important to them. According to the TaxWatch, about 2,350 citizens have attended the meetings, and more than 900 Floridians have addressed the commission on a variety of issues. <a href=\"http:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/240839-florida-taxwatch-survey-finds-florida-voters-unaware-constitution-revision-commission\">Florida Politics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Members of the Commission were appointed by Governor Scott and other state leaders and serve at their pleasure. These members have the sole power to determine what issues make it on the ballot yet, most Floridians have never heard of them. In spite of their power, the voters will have the final say in what becomes the law of the land.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the first time, the commission\u2019s work product will need support of three-fifths of those voting. That means every \u201cNo\u201d vote is worth 1.5 times as much as every \u201cYes\u201d vote. It\u2019s always hard to amend the Constitution \u2013 it should be \u2013 and the 60 percent rule makes it even harder&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout will be less in a non-presidential year, and candidates for governor and Cabinet seats can capitalize on various amendments \u2013 for or against them \u2013 in their campaigns. But it might be tactically safer for them to avoid the referendum issues, rather than alienating voters on either side.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, people tend to vote against anything they\u2019re not sure of \u2013 if they vote at all, down at the end of a long ballot.<\/p>\n<p>So to get 60 percent, the amendments will need public confidence that they were debated fairly and adopted by experienced, well-meaning leaders who looked beyond the horizon and thought of Florida\u2019s future. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/2017\/06\/09\/constitution-committee-already-creating-uneasiness\/381335001\/\">News-Press<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>The Florida voter has the power to decide the future of the state.<\/strong> Tell your elected officials and Governor Scott that students and their public schools are important to you.
