\"Graduationcelebration\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Last year members of the Student Alliance for Public Schools conducted research at 4 high schools in Hillsborough County about barriers and needed supports related to high school graduation. They found that what students identified as the most important element in their quest for a diploma is supportive relationships. The\u00a0students presented their findings to the community at GradNation Community Summit presented in partnership with America’s Promise Alliance.(click here to see highlights) The Tampa Summit was the first in the country to be completely student led, and the power of hearing from students about what they need to be successful was very powerful.<\/p>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
America\u2019s Promise Alliance<\/a>\u00a0has now released a new report that also highlights youth voice in work related to raising high school graduation rates and it explains that students across the country have the same needs as our local students. The report illustrates the impact that supportive relationships with adults and peers can have on high school graduation rates.<\/div>\n

Four findings were identified:<\/p>\n

\n

Too many young people are facing too many hurdles with too little help.<\/h4>\n

Young people who left school\u00a0without graduating experienced twice as many adverse life experiences as youth who graduated on time. More\u00a0than half of those who left school without graduating experienced five or more adverse life experiences between\u00a0the ages of 14 and 18.\u00a0Too many young people who leave school without graduating are experiencing a kind of\u00a0relationship poverty. They don\u2019t have enough people in their lives who can provide the type of support they\u00a0need.<\/span><\/p>\n

Relationships increase likely graduation and enable young people to redirect internal strengths.<\/h4>\n

Overall\u00a0support from adults in school reduces the likelihood of young people leaving school by 25 percent. Instrumental\u00a0support from adults outside of school reduces the likelihood of young people leaving school by 17 percent. With\u00a0supportive relationships in their lives, young people are able to draw on their own strengths and focus on\u00a0academic success.<\/p>\n

Support buffers adversity \u2013 up to a point.<\/h4>\n

Even a moderate amount of support boosts likely graduation by at\u00a0least 20 percentage points for young people experiencing moderate risk. Young people reporting five or more\u00a0adverse life experiences hit an adversity cliff, and social support alone does little to help. Uninterrupted\u00a0graduation stays well below 50 percent, even with high support from multiple sources. Relationships still matter,\u00a0but they must include efforts to resolve trauma, health problems, and social and economic barriers.<\/p>\n

Caring adults don\u2019t need to be heroes \u2013 young people need an anchor and a web of support.<\/h4>\n

Young people\u00a0growing up in challenging circumstances need multiples sources of support at varying intensities. An anchor\u00a0provides stability and trust. Once that person is in place, the anchor can illuminate a web of supportive\u00a0relationships<\/strong> that can provide information and resources. Some young people may be standing in a room that\u00a0contains all the support they need, but they need someone else to turn on the lights so they can see what\u2019s there\u00a0and reach for it.
\n<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Don’t Quit On Me” outlines steps individuals and community members can take to increase student success. These include mentoring, tutoring, providing targeted interventions to prevent drop outs and to increase “drop ins”, and revising school discipline policies. In addition, engaging health care professionals and social support networks is a suggested path to raising graduation rates.<\/p>\n

Student Alliance for Public Schools programs are now active in 12 high schools (8 in Hillsborough County and 4 in Pinellas).\u00a0This spring, they will once again lead a GradNation Community Summit and will inspire\u00a0the Tampa Bay community to work together to raise graduation rates.
